Survivable Space incorporates 3 different management zones, with different treatments in each zone.

Zone 3 - Managed Wildland Zone (typically extends at least 200 feet from the home and all attachments):
1. This zone encompasses an area of native vegetation. Thin and prune trees as needed for your management objectives (i.e., recreational use, aesthetics, wind barriers, etc.).

Survivable Space incorporates 3 different management zones, with different treatments in each zone.

Zone 2 - Moderate Fuel Reduction Zone (typically extends at least 100 feet from home and all attachments):

1. Tree management
- Prune under large trees to a height of 10 ft and remove any ladder fuels from under trees.
- Thin all trees and shrubs so their crowns (outermost branches of the canopy) are at least 10 ft apart.
- Dispose of pruned limbs, branches, and other woody debris

2. Stack firewood and wood piles in areas of this zone (outside of Zone 1/at least 30 ft from home and attachments) that are uphill from from your home and attachments

3. Propane tanks should be kept in this zone (outside of Zone 1/at least 30 ft from home and attachments) with all vegetation at least 10 ft away

More tips:
- Replacing or buffering native pines and junipers in this zone with broadleaf and/or deciduous trees will help keep flames on the ground/out of the trees.
- Consider planting meadows of native, drought-tolerant, low-water use grasses and wildflowers in this zone
- Use combinations of warm and cool season perennial grasses and annual and perennial wildflowers and keep everything under 8 in. high (especially when dry or dormant)
- Clear walkways or paths in this zone to break up vegetation/vuel and make it more difficult for fire to spread ... See MoreSee Less
